APTN Special “Coyote Spirit” Producer/Co-Director

“Coyote Spirit” is a dramatic, reflective story about a young teen-age native girl (Lisa) living in the city, returning to the Osoyoos Indian Band Reserve to spend the summer with her grand parents. She arrives in a sullen mood because of the prospect of spending 2 whole months of her summer on the reserve with these 2 elders with whom she has lost touch. The legends and spirits of the “Okanagan” people come alive through her fleeting encounters with the Coyote as he roams the Okanagan landscape, keeping a watchful eye over the mountains and valleys, protecting the Okanagan People from negative forces. The Coyote senses this harmful energy in Lisa and confronts her. With the love, patience, and guidance of her grandparents, we slowly see Lisa’s negative attitude change into appreciative awareness and understanding of her native culture as a strong sense of belonging and identity is rekindled within her. At the end of the film, we see Lisa as a young adult, returning to spend time with her grand parents, this time with pride, respect, and love for her native “Okanagan” Heritage.
